This cannot possibly happen too often! Wouldn’t you like to own the first car that John Lennon ever bought and, even better still, it is a classic car.
Well, John Lennon bought a Ferrari the day after he passed his driving test back in February 1965. By the way, for those of you that do not know, John Lennon was a member of the famous Beatles pop group. He was shot dead outside his apartment in New York in 1980 at the age of 40.
The blue Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Coupe, that originally cost him £6,500, is being sold at auction and was recently photographed at his former property called Kenwood on the exclusive St George’s Hill estate in Weybridge in Surrey. The property was bought by him in July 1964 for £20,000 where he lived with his first wife Cynthia until 1968. It is presently for sale at £13,750,000.
When it came to choosing a car, he was inundated with car salesmen visiting his home to try to persuade him to buy the likes of Jaguars and Aston Martins but he chose the Ferrari. In today’s money the Ferrari would have cost in the region of £110,000.
Whilst the Ferrari was in his possession he drove about 20,000 miles but sold it three years after purchasing it which was in the same year that he vacated Kenwood.
The classic car is powered by a V12 4-litre engine that is capable of rocketing to 152mph in only a few seconds. It is expected to fetch in the region of £220,000 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed when it is auctioned by Bonhams on the 12th July. It has a service history, the original registration certificate plus some correspondence with John Lennon. Without the connection with the pop star such a car would have expected to realise around £150,000.
