We are currently having some below freezing temperatures here in the UK so it is perhaps a good idea that we talk about some of the things that owners of classic cars should consider doing to try to protect their cars from adverse weather whilst their vehicle is in storage. After all such vehicles are possibly more loved than motorists’ modern family saloons or hatchbacks.
It tends to be in the winter when classic car enthusiasts tend to pop their cherished vehicles in the garage until spring arrives when they feel it is time to bring their vehicles out of hibernation. Before doing so it would be a good idea to give your classic car a thorough clean both inside and outside. Then make sure that it is polished and waxed to provide that added layer of protection.
You should make sure that there is adequate anti-freeze in the vehicle to provide protection against freezing conditions. Ensure that you have windscreen washer additive to stop the water freezing. Make sure that the oil is in good condition and that the level is correct and that the brake fluid and level is fine.
Assuming that it is safe to do so, release the handbrake whilst it is stored in the garage over the winter months using something to put against the wheels to stop the vehicle moving i.e. chocks.
Make sure that the tyres are pumped up to a high pressure to avoid flat spots or jack up the classic car so that all 4 tyres are off the ground.
Periodically, whilst your vehicle is in storage, on a sunny, dry day, consider taking your classic car out for a drive for a few miles to make sure that nothing has seized up. Do not just start the engine and leave it to tick over for some time as this may cause engine damage and create unwanted moisture.
Consider disconnecting the car battery and use a trickle charger to ensure that the battery is charged up sufficient to ensure the vehicles starts and that no damage is done to the battery.
You may want to put a car cover over your cherished vehicle.
Do make sure that you have adequate classic car insurance in place whether that is laid up cover or full cover where appropriate. Why not get in contact with us to obtain a competitive renewal quotation.
