There was a very interesting car sold at the H and H Classic Cars Imperial War Museum, Duxford on the 20th March 2019. It was a 1936 Bentley 4.5 Litre Vanden Plas Tourer that had an estimated sale price of £150,000 to £200,000 but was actually sold for £444,375.
The classic luxury saloon car was last owned by the late Charles P Blackham who bought it from its original owner way back in 1952 for £260. We are sure that you will agree it has certainly increased in value over the years. Following Mr Blackham’s death the vehicle was discovered in his garage. He was in the RAF in the Second World War and took part in a bombing raid on Hitler’s Eagle Nest establishment.
As can be seen from the pictures on the website of handh.co.uk the classic car is in need of quite a bit of tender loving care both on the bodywork and on the interior of the vehicle as well as mechanically. It will no doubt take quite some time to restore this rare vehicle to a satisfactory standard and will probably involve the new owner spending quire a lot of money in doing so.
It would be wonderful if the new owner of this classic car would make available some photographs once the vehicle has been fully restored. Hopefully, the works will be carried out to an exacting standard.
There were many other cars sold at the above auction details of which you can find on the auctioneer’s website. For instance a 1974 BMW 3.0 CSi sold for £70,312.50, a 1981 Panther De Ville V12 sold for £33,750, a 1959 Merrerschmitt KR200 Cabriolet DeLuxe that had a reserve price of £20,000 to £25,000 was sold for £25,875, a 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale that had a reserve price of £40,000 to £50,000 sold for £52,312.50 and a 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL achieved a sale price of £81,000.
Let us hope that the new owner of this “garage find” has arranged suitable classic car insurance to provide a high level of cover.
