A sum of £900,000 has been paid out to get Rowan Atkinson’s car back on the road resulting in this setting a record for the UK’s biggest car repair bill. He crashed the car back in August 2011 whilst travelling along a road near Peterborough.
He is well known as the star in both Blackadder and Mr Bean. As a result of crashing the McLaren F1 into a tree he suffered a shoulder injury. It has taken technicians at the Woking base of McLaren in excess of 12 months to undertake the repair work. The vehicle has a 6.1-litre engine with that being deposited 20 yards from the rest of the car when the accident took place.
The repair bill is three times that of the previous record car repair bill for a Pagani Zonda that Aviva paid out £300,000 to repair in 2010. McLaren technicians took 4 weeks calculating how much it would cost to repair. This is the second time that he has crashed the car with the first occasion being back in 1999 when he collided with a Rover Metro.
The car insurance company, that have not been named, made the decision to repair the car due to the current value of a McLaren F1. Only 64 McLaren F1’s were built back in 1997 so the £640,000 Mr Atkinson paid has been a good investment as they can now fetch as much £3.5 million. With a 627 bhp engine the car can get from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 240 mph.
Apparently, now that he has the car back in his possession he does not intend to keep it for show and never has. He enjoys driving it and would like to be able to get the mileage up from its current 38,000 miles to 100,000.
The McLaren F1 is hot on the heels of the most expensive classic car – the Ferrari 250 GTO that would fetch £20 million.
