An interesting classic car came up for sale at the H and H Classics Car Auction at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford Cambridgeshire on the 19th June 2024. However, it does not appear to have been sold.
The vehicle in question is a 1970 Ford Cortina 1600E “World Cup”. The interesting thing about this particular vehicle is that it was one of thirty Cortina 1600Es that were provided to squad members that were due to represent England at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. This one was loaned to Francis Lee who was a striker for England. He had the car on loan for a period of 12 months before purchasing the vehicle at a reduced price to be driven by his wife.
It is believed he paid between £600 to £700 for the car but due to it attracting a bit of unwanted attention he sold it a few months later for £1,250 in a part-exchange deal.
Its estimated sale price at the above auction was £50,000 to £60,000.
The registration number of the vehicle is GWC 2H. GWH actually stood for Great World Cup.
The car had the Union flag and the Mexican flag on the front wings. There was also a special logo on the two front doors.
This delightful classic car has had 5 owners but is said to only have 28,500 miles on the clock making it an extremely low mileage vehicle for its age. After all, how many cars have you come across that have been around for over 50 years with as low mileage as that? Apparently, it was restored in the 1990s.
It is going to be interesting what is going to happen to the vehicle now. Will the current owner decide to keep the classic car or will they decide to try to sell it in the future.
